Are Rising Property Assessments Affecting Homeowners More Than They Realize?

A lot of homeowners are seeing their property assessments go up—and it can feel a little concerning.

But here’s the part that often gets misunderstood:

Higher assessment doesn’t always mean a huge jump in your taxes.

In Maryland, there are protections like the homestead tax credit, which limits how much your taxable assessment can increase each year if the home is your primary residence.

So even if your assessment goes up significantly, your actual tax bill may increase more gradually.

It’s also important to understand:

  • Assessment value is not the same as market value
  • Your home may sell for more or less than the assessed amount
  • Taxes are based on multiple factors, not just the assessment

This is one of those areas where a little education goes a long way.

If you’re unsure how your assessment affects your value or your taxes, it’s worth taking a closer look so you fully understand what it means for you.
